The principal concept characterising this park is the need to find a way of connecting the past, the present and the future, in memory of the disastrous earthquake that caused a school to collapse many years ago, and in which many children lost their lives. As a means of dealing with the dramatic past in a serene manner, the community’s wish is to return the site to a place of play, relaxation and entertainment. The park recounts the history of the site, while at the same time looking forward, towards the future.
The project's essential theme consists of an opposition of spaces that alludes to the two contrasting situations: the past and the future as the full and the empty. Landscaping and architectural features provide intimacy and protection as a way of comforting those affected by the tragedy. Beyond honouring the memory, the park offers an opportunity for a new perspective. A central wall symbolises survival of the earthquake and is used as a place for prayer.
